Los Gemelosde Cayey, Puerto Rico

The story of twin brothers Omar and José Colón — from the mountains of Puerto Rico to the heart of Little Havana, Miami

Born in the Fields of the Island of Enchantment

Omar and José Colón, twin brothers, were born and raised in the fields of the beautiful Island of Enchantment. From a young age, they were taught about the various products and authentic flavors of the land.

Growing up in Cayey, a town nestled in the mountains of central Puerto Rico, the brothers learned to cook at their grandparents' side. Every recipe carried generations of tradition — the perfect sofrito, the right way to season and mash plantains in a pilón, the slow-roasted pork that defined family gatherings and holidays.

Their father's dream was to share these flavors with the world. Following his vision, Omar and José opened their first restaurant in Cayey, celebrating the authentic taste of their grandparents' recipes and quickly becoming a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

"Los Gemelos have preserved their family's heritage, elevating the nobility of Puerto Ricans around the world."

— Mofongo Restaurant Calle 8

After the Storm

From Hurricane María to Calle Ocho

After Hurricane María devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, both brothers decided to seek new horizons and bring the genuine essence of Puerto Rico's culinary art to Miami, Florida.

In 2018, they arrived in the heart of Little Havana on the iconic Calle Ocho — SW 8th Street — a neighborhood already alive with Latin culture, music, and the aroma of Caribbean cooking. It was the perfect home for Mofongo Restaurant.

Today, Mofongo Restaurant Calle 8 is more than a restaurant. It's a cultural landmark where Miami locals and visitors experience authentic Puerto Rican cuisine the way it was meant to be — made from scratch with recipes passed down through generations, served with warmth, pride, and the unmistakable spirit of the island.

From the signature mofongo pounded in a traditional wooden pilón to the show-stopping Chuleta Kan Kan served on a sword, every dish tells a story. Every plate is a love letter to Puerto Rico.
